Pulp & Paper Mills

Coenen Mechanical has a daily presence in Pulp/Paper mills throughout Wisconsin. Our experienced tradesmen are well versed in completing new installations and repairs on high pressure steam, condensate, natural gas, air piping that keep the paper machine running. A majority of our tradesmen are certified steam joint installers – we have completed installation of over 100 steam joints in the last two years. We understand the importance of downtime and will work to plan and complete work to minimize the time the machine is not in production.

Featured Projects

Multiple Paper Machine Steam/Condensate Re-Design and Installation

Coenen Mechanical was responsible for installation of a re-designed steam and condensate system on five paper machines. Work included design and installation of new 100 psi steam headers on each machine, installation of over 90 stationary siphons/steam joints on the machines, and the re-design and installation of new piping and miscellaneous equipment on the condensate system for different cascade effects.

Paper Machine Blowboxes Refurbish

Coenen Mechanical was responsible for completing rebuilds on 3 blow boxes as a sub-contractor to a major paper industry OEM on the paper machine in Pennsylvania. Work included removal, custom modifications, re-installation, alignment, and start-up of the blow-boxes. Work was completed using jigs on the customers job site with 3 days to complete the work.

Paper Machine Flotation Dryer Refurbish

Coenen Mechanical was responsible for completing rebuilds on six flotation dryers as a sub-contractor to a major paper industry OEM on the machine in Stevens Point. Work consisted of removal of framework, rolls, and boxes as well as rigging and shipment, and complete internal rebuilds on the machine boxes. Boxes were removed from the machine, shipped to Coenen’s shop for rebuild, and re-installed in a 5 day outage.

Hot Water Recovery System Installation

Coenen Mechanical was responsible for installation of a hot water recovery system throughout the mill. Work included piping from the pulp mill to condensers on three different paper machine shower systems. Coenen fabricated a 10,000 gallon stainless steel tank in place due to space considerations in the machine basement. Work was coordinated with shutdowns on three different machines and the pulp mill to make tie-ins.

Paper Machine Wet End Vacuum Replacement System Installation

Coenen Mechanical was responsible for installation of a paper machine wet end vacuum system. Work included replacement of all vacuum elements on the wet end of the machine, vacuum piping, and controls. All work was completed during a five day outage.<p>Coenen fabricated all of the stainless piping, save-all tray and modified additional pans in the field.

Paper Machine New Winder Installation

Coenen Mechanical was responsible for installation of a new paper machine winder. Work included installation of the HVAC system for the new MCC including ductwork, fabrication of a portion of the trim system including air lube plates, installation of the trim system, and installation of all hydraulics and pneumatics on the winder. Coenen completed all piping layout and design for the project.

Stock Prep Screen Room Re-Design

Coenen Mechanical was responsible for re-designing the existing screen room in the stock prep area of the Menasha mill. Work included design assistance and lay-out of all of the piping systems, fabrication of a new 18 foot diameter tank in place on the mezzanine, and fabrication and installation of all piping. In addition, Coenen installed two pressure screens, two pump skids, new cleaner heads, and system controls to reroute stock flows in the mill.

PM #2 Radial Attenuator Installation

Coenen Mechanical was responsible for installation of a new radial attenuator on PM #2 to improve sheet profile and performance. Work included civil modifications to the floor, design and fabrication of all support structures, catwalks, and platforms, and installation of the attenuator system. Equipment was installed while the machine was running with limited outage time for tie-ins.

Paper Machine Heating Coil Replacements

Coenen Mechanical was responsible for removing the existing coils from three machines and replacing with new coils. Work included installation of new piping, steam traps, and modifications to the coil houses. This work was completed during a machine outage with a short schedule which required extensive planning and coordination with mill production.

Paper Machine Heat Recovery System Installation

Coenen Mechanical was a sub-contractor for a major paper industry OEM for the installation of a new paper machine heat recovery system. Work included installation of three heat recovery towers (air to air, air to water, and air to glycol) to reclaim heat from the paper machine exhaust. A new glycol heating system for the entire machine was installed, replacing all steam coils in the machine room with glycol coils including a new control system. The OEM provided all of the equipment for the project. Coenen completed piping layout, design, fabrication, and engineering for over 2,000 feet of water and glycol piping. In addition to the piping, Coenen installed duct work to all three towers and replaced two exhaust fans/stacks.

Work on this project was completed within a short schedule window with one 2-day outage to complete the tie-ins, start-up, and commission. Coenen served as the project manager responsible for all subcontractors, schedule, QA/QC, and risk control.
